Professional Bio:
Abdul is a veterinarian with about 39 years of experience in the field of infectious disease control. He has worked for the Department of Livestock Services of Bangladesh, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), USAID’s Preparedness and Response Project, and USAID. He designed and implemented USAID’s System Strengthening for One Health Activity, the first-ever bilateral Global Health Security Project. Abdul also managed the Community Health System Strengthening Project, which focused on building local capacity for emergency response, as well as the Infectious Disease Control and Surveillance Project of USAID. He contributed to the development of the National Livestock Policy, the National Avian Influenza and Pandemic Influenza Response Plan, and the National One Health Strategy. In addition, he helped draft animal health laws, regulations, standard operating procedures, and guidelines. Abdul led numerous outbreak investigations and response activities in Bangladesh and established the One Health Secretariat, a multisectoral coordination mechanism for Global Health Security interlocutor ministries. He also supported the government in setting up interministerial oversight committees for One Health. Abdul actively participated in assessment processes using international tools such as the Joint External Evaluation and the Performance of Veterinary Services, and contributed to the development of the Avian Influenza and Pandemic Influenza Communication Strategy. He currently serves as the Executive Editor of Interface: One Health Newsletter.
